Grilled Sesame, Lime English Peas
We had a special guest staying with us for the weekend….My Momma!! It was the long weekend here on the west coast and my Mom came over to visit. We tend to spend a lot of time in the kitchen when we are together, we both love to cook and make new creations and this weekend was no different.
Saturday morning my Mom, my bestie and I headed out to the farmers market to gather some fresh produce for a good ol’ kitchen cooking session. My oh my the market was stunning, filled to the brim this week with fresh, local, seasonal produce, we found basil the size of three heads, the most perfect eggplant, no bruises, scrapes or scratches! And berries oh the berries were AH-MAZ-ING, locally grown blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries (my four favourite), just picked to their most perfect of juicy, sweet, ripeness. Needless to say I have a bunch of new recipes in the works, ones you are going to love.
I try to eat local, organic and seasonal as much as I can, which is one reason I love the markets in the summer because you know everything you are buying is all of the above. What we put into our bodies is incredibly important, if not the most important thing (besides what we put on our bodies). So treat yourself with the respect you deserve inside and out. (I will dive into why I eat what I eat another day as I feel it deserves a post on its own).
Before I go any further into my weekend antics I think I have kept you waiting long enough for that grilled pea recipe I was telling you about last week so without further adieu here you go.....The BEST five minutes you will ever spend making something.
grilled sesame lime english peas
ingredients
4 cups of English peas
2 tbsp of sesame oil
1 tbsp of melted butter
juice of one lime
himalayan salt to taste
toasted black or white sesame seeds
directions
Throw all of the above ingredients into a large bowl and toss together. Next you can either put the peas directly onto the BBQ or in a grilling tray or you can put them on skewers.
Grill for 2-3 minutes per side. Sprinkle a little more salt on top and the toasted sesame seeds.
You can also make these peas in a cast iron on top of the stove. They take about 10 minutes on medium high heat (let them get a little blackened it adds a lot of flavour).
You eat these like you would edamame beans. Pop them out of their shell into your mouth. Perfect as a side dish for pretty much anything or just an afternoon snack.
I told you easy peasy (no pun intended, well maybe a little ;)). Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks I am going to be sharing baked eggplant Parmesan (with a homemade spicy, roasted veggie marinara sauce) that not only super healthy but out of this world delicious, as well as an incredibly healthy three berry crumble, plus a vegan basil pesto that will knock your socks off. I told you we were busy bees in the kitchen!
My weekend also had plenty of nature visits, yoga mat sessions, and a sneaky visit to a local ice cream shop…..
Last week my best friend sent me an email at work in a super excited caps lock voice kinda way…..”OMG, I JUST HAD THE BEST ICE CREAM EVER!!” Her work had brought in locally made, organic ice cream sandwiches for the office (I know, nice right). So after hearing about this ice cream for the next couple of days I knew Saturday afternoon on our girls day we were going to have to stop, so stop we did.
Cold Comfort ice cream is a local shop here in Victoria that is making ice cream like no other. They have over 300 flavours (think salted caramel, fresh basil with fresh mint and sour cherry swirl, Lavender w/raspberry swirl, the flavours go on and on and some are pretty funky) and they don’t use any artificial ingredients, preservatives, emulsifiers, starches or stabilizers. They have everything from dairy free, to vegan, to gluten free ice cream and ice cream cookie sandwiches.
If you are in need of a treat or are visiting Victoria one day, make this stop it is sooo worth it and your tummy will thank you.
You can check out their website here and read a little more about this amazing little company making big waves.
Well my lovies my Momma is still here and we are off for dinner at the in-laws, East Indian food, yumm so good, one day I will share some of my Indian recipes with you, I make a pretty mean curry (taught by my boyfriend’s Mom, who learned in India so it is definitely good).
